SUCET receives Heart Research UK grant to improve heart health

Southend United Community & Educational Trust (SUCET) has been awarded a £9,250 grant from national charity Heart Research UK, to inspire children and their families to look after their hearts.

The Trust has been awarded the grant to deliver Heart Research UK’s ‘Heart of the Community’ project.

As part of the project, SUCET’s community coaches will work with local school children in years five and six to build up their awareness and understanding of how the body works, the importance of the heart, and how they can take practical steps to help improve their overall health and heart health.

Six weeks of fun sport and physical activity sessions, workshops around healthy lifestyles and life-saving skills such as basic CPR will be provided for the 1,200 pupils taking part in the Heart of the Community project.

The pupils will be offered free tickets to attend heart health-themed matchdays and given access to the SUCET Family Fan Zone.

A first team player from Southend United will be appointed as a project ambassador and the Trust will work closely with the Club to drive a heart health awareness campaign throughout 2021.

Sarah Mirfin, Healthy Heart Coordinator at Heart Research UK, said:

“We are seeing a decline in physical activity amongst school-aged children, with only one in five achieving 60 active minutes each day. Physical activity has a big impact on health and happiness both now and in the future.

“We would like to thank Subway customers who have donated in stores across Anglia. Their contribution will enable 1,200 school pupils and countless family members, friends, football fans and the wider community of South East Essex to be inspired to eat better and move more.

“We are thrilled to be supporting the project and cannot wait to see the fun interactive games inspire groups of children who might not normally get involved in sport.”

Angus Martin, Project Officer at SUCET, said:

“Football is where the passion of Southend United Community & Educational Trust starts, not where it ends. Kicking a ball is not the be all and end all, it is about building up the courage to take a shot.

“We are grateful to Heart Research UK and Subway for the funding to enable young children to get more active, eat better and understand why this is good for their health. We also want to give them the confidence and skills to recognise when someone has had a cardiac arrest and to perform basic CPR.

“Our vison is to get into communities and inspire them to live a healthier, happier, longer life. We are so excited about the project and cannot wait to get started.”

Tackling Loneliness Together

Southend United Community & Educational Trust (SUCET) is proud to be part of a major new nationwide programme to tackle loneliness among older people, known as Tackling Loneliness Together.

The EFL Trust has received £810,000 from the Department of Digital Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) to support EFL Club Community Organisations in 32 deprived locations across England – including Southend-on-Sea and its surrounding areas – with the aim of connecting more older people at risk of loneliness.

A recent study from the Office National Statistics (ONS) showed that 2.6 million adults reported that they felt lonely ”often” or ”always” whilst 7.4 million adults reported their well-being had been affected through them having felt lonely in the past seven days.

Since lockdown, staff from the SUCET team have been in regular contact with members of the charity’s Senior Shrimpers and Walking Football programmes, checking in via phone calls and Facebook messaging as well as sending letters in the post to provide reassurance and offer extra support during such a challenging time.

There are plans to work alongside Southend United to develop a ‘buddy system’, enabling more older people to attend matches in a supported fashion, as well as arrange socially distanced cafe meetups at Roots Hall whereby people can get together face-to-face and have a chat to help reduce social isolation.

Mike Evans, Chief Executive Officer of the EFL Trust, commented:

“We are proud to have been chosen to be part of this vital mission to support the older people in our communities.

“We see this as an endorsement of the great work that our CCOs have done in this area and we know there is so much more that our network will achieve. Our Health and Wellbeing team are working hard to match the expertise of our network to the communities where it is most desperately needed and we continue to work with DCMS, NHS, Public Health England and other agencies to ensure we can all build back better after COVID-19.”

If you, a friend, family member or neighbour would like to benefit from this new programme, please contact April Smith on a.smith@southendunited-cet.co.uk or give us a call on 01702 341351.

How the Education department has adapted during the pandemic

Charlie Barlow, Head of Education & Training, and Hayley Wren, NCS Programme Manager, discuss how Southend United Community & Educational Trust’s Education department has adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

How have you as a department adapted since COVID-19 began?

CB: As a department we’ve had to take an alternative approach towards our delivery of the students’ qualification. With the help of our education providers, League Football Education, we’ve managed to safely and efficiently use an online learning platform called Showbie. As a team we’ve had to adapt to working from home and ensuring our communication to the students and each other has been approachable and more regular than usual.

HW: With Summer 2020 being repurposed due to COVID-19, we’ve adapted by focusing on the new Alternative programme, which will engage the young people taking part to get involved within their local community.

What has delivery looked like since COVID-19 began?

CB: On Monday mornings, the education staff set learners a task through Showbie which must be submitted by Tuesday afternoons. The students have a day off on Wednesdays before a new task is set on Thursdays and handed in on Fridays.

HW: We’re in the mix of creating the new Alternative programme.

What were your initial priorities when it was announced that face-to-face engagement would be suspended due to COVID-19?

CB: Our initial priority was to ensure the students could still complete their course remotely and to the best of their ability.

HW: Once announced by the NCS Trust that NCS would be going online, that became our main priority throughout lockdown.

What have been some of the biggest challenges posed by COVID-19? And how have you overcome these challenges?

CB: The biggest challenge would certainly be ensuring the students stay engaged. Having our robust games programme temporarily taken away has been tough for us. The tutors have had to create a different learning style so the students can understand the tasks. The tutors have kept tasks fun which can be done safely at home. Another big challenge has not been having access to our facilities at Roots Hall and we mustn’t take this for granted.

HW: NCS being cancelled this summer has been the biggest challenge. This has had a big impact on my mental health and I was pretty down for about a week or so after hearing the news. I’m now focusing my energy on the new Alternative programme which I’m excited about.

How have the students/YP on NCS adjusted during this period?

CB: Overall, I think we can all say this has been more successful than we first thought and I’m pleased to be able to say that. Two of our second year learners, Lewis Telling and Billy Appleton, have been offered Sports Coaching Apprenticeships with us. They both completed their college qualification remotely and were then successful after three waves of remote interviews. Lewis and Billy will be starting with us in September if we’re back delivering within the local community by then.

HW: The NCS Trust has been conducting all communication due to GDPR. However, we have a Facebook page set up for the YP who were due to go on Summer 2020. They were disappointed that the programme had been cancelled but fully understood.

What is the future looking like in terms of delivery?

CB: The future is looking bright. We’ve recruited a good amount of new students for next year, both returning and new learners who have just completed their GCSEs. Hopefully, if the virus continues to stay at a safe R rate, then we can be back to delivering as normal in September and that’s our full intention.

HW: We’ll be running the new Alternative programme in August which will focus on the young people giving back to their local community. Autumn will run as normal just without the residential phase and will only be for our college students. Summer 2021 will be bigger than ever!

Thousands of children and families will benefit from SUCET’s Joy of Moving Home School Festival

On International Day of Families, Southend United Community & Educational Trust is partnering with the EFL Trust and Ferrero to launch the ‘Joy of Moving Home School Festival’, a full afternoon of home school activities and games to get children and their families moving and having fun.

Following the launch of the new online Joy of Moving Resource Hub, the Home School Festival will involve 72 other EFL Trust network Club Community Organisations.

At a time when children are unlikely to experience the fun of their school sports day this year or missing play time with their friends, this will offer children and families an afternoon of movement and fun with different games and activities to choose from.

The Joy of Moving programme, a Ferrero CSR project, has been supporting Year 5 children across EFL Communities in the UK for the past six years. The Joy of Moving programme has consisted of two elements; the Move & Learn programme and Joy of Moving Festivals. Over 310,000 children have been introduced to moving and learning new skills all while having fun and playing.

Mike Evans, Chief Executive at EFL Trust, said:

“We are delighted to bring the Joy of Moving Home School Festival to thousands of households across the UK. So many children will miss out on their sports day and our festival should offer fun whilst also keeping children active during these times.

“Our network of Club Community Organisations have been doing some amazing work in response to Coronavirus, and this is another way in which football is supporting the community and reaching families in all regions of the country.”

Charlie Cayton, Director of Corporate Affairs and Communications, Ferrero UK, said:

“We have had a strategic partnership with the EFL Trust for many years delivering our corporate social responsibility (CSR) project the Joy of Moving Move & Learn and Festivals.

“We have swiftly worked with the EFL Trust to adapt the programme to share our simple and fun unbranded games with parents and teachers, that give ideas on how to get kids moving through play. This includes a freely accessible resource hub for everyone. We are really excited to see the Joy of Moving Home School Festival in action.”

The games and activities are based on the unique Joy of Moving methodology, developed by Ferrero with key independent parties including Foro Italico (Rome University) and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI). This methodology inspires children to move through play across the world, whilst developing key skills in four major areas: physical fitness, motor coordination, cognitive functions and creativity and life skills.

The Joy of Moving Home School Festival will begin next week. Keep a look out for what is happening in Southend-on-Sea and surrounding aras through #JOMHomeFestival or to find more fun games to play, visit www.joyofmovingresourcehub.co.uk.

FIT FANS online campaign launches to get football fans active

The EFL and EFL Trust have today launched an online FIT FANS campaign to provide a safe way for fans to get active in the safety of their homes.

In support of Sport England’s ‘Stay in Work Out’ campaign, the programme will ensure fans have a safe way to start and maintain exercise safely, during this current period.

According to new research released by Sport England, over 65% of people believe that exercise is helping them with their mental health, making an active lifestyle more important than ever for EFL fans and the nation.

Over the next 12 weeks we will feature sessions developed by two fitness coaches, Scott Copeland and Steph Thompson from the Club Community Organisation (CCO) network and will be released twice a week for fans to follow and get involved.

The sessions will introduce the concepts of safe warm up and cool down, increasing daily step counts and activity levels gradually, before moving onto sessions including aerobic strength and training. The exercises will vary and be fun to really give fans the chance to keep moving and see improvements in their fitness.

The sessions will be released each week on Wednesday at 5pm and Saturday at 11am on the EFL and EFL Trust YouTube channels, and will be available for fans to watch at their own leisure within the safety of their own homes.

Stay home, save lives and join the FIT FANS movement as we find new ways to keep moving in around our homes.
